Name: Shirogane
Age: Actual age unknown but implied that he’s been alive since the beginning of the world. Appears to be in his mid twenties.
Gender: Male
Canon: Monochrome Factor
Timeline: Ending of Chapter 55

Character History:
Shirogane came into being with the creation of the world, pure shadow given human shape, and the first thing he laid his eyes on was his counterpart: Ryuuko. They had been made to be perfect counterparts, “Direct Kings” given a mark of Direct Royalty, the tuner factor, which gave them the power to keep the world in balance between light and darkness. Shirogane was the Direct King who governed darkness and the Shin while Ryuuko governed light and the Rei. Each had to have five “children”, Shin as Shirogane’s children and Rei as Ryuuko’s, chosen to assist them in their duties. Eventually, as the world grew and people’s hearts with their darkness grew as well, it became more and more difficult for Shirogane and Ryuuko to balance the world by themselves, so Ryuuko made a proposition: two more kings. Human kings. Despite his misgivings, Shirogane eventually agreed and they chose the quiet Shisui and the ambitious Homurabi to be the other two kings of Light and Darkness. Although Shisui lagged behind Homurabi in his duties, Ryuuko convinced a skeptical Shirogane that it was because neither had yet settled into their new roles.

Everything seemed to work out for a while, even with Ryuuko going behind Shirogane’s back and risking his own life to create a child, a new being made entirely from nothing, which he named “Kou”. Then Shirogane noticed that ever so slightly, the balance was tipping towards the darkness. The number of Shisui and Homurabi’s children were not equal. That was unacceptable, and Shirogane told Ryuuko so. Homurabi refused to slow down his pace to meet his counterpart’s and Shisui worried and worried when recruiting his children. The only way, Shirogane said, would be to get rid of Shisui and replace him with someone more capable. Unknown to Ryuuko and Shirogane, their conversation was heard by Homurabi, who didn’t want a new counterpart that wasn’t Shisui, even if he didn’t respect Shisui or Shisui’s methods. His counterpart was Shisui, and that wasn’t allowed to change. So Homurabi decided the best way would be to kill both Ryuuko and Shirogane and take their jobs as Direct Kings. There would be no way for anyone to replace Shisui then.

Homurabi managed to take Ryuuko’s tuner factor with Sawaki’s help. Homurabi didn’t manage to kill him, however, and Ryuuko made his way to Shirogane, who could only watch helplessly as the one person he never thought he would lose died in front of him. When Homurabi showed up, he was met with a furious Shirogane, who couldn’t see beyond the fact that Homurabi was covered in Ryuuko’s blood and Ryuuko was dead. Shirogane attacked Homurabi, fully intending to kill him, but couldn’t manage it because Homurabi now held Ryuuko’s tuner factor. Using the power of the Direct King of Light, Homurabi banished Shirogane from the Shadow World, stripping Shirogane of his Direct Kingship and sending both Shirogane and his separated tuner factor into the human world.

Shirogane had a lot of time to stew on all the things he could have done and should have done during his exile in the human world and came to two conclusions: he had to kill Homurabi and he had to resurrect Ryuuko, then everything would go back to the way it was. So following his plan, he hunted down the human that held Ryuuko’s spirit, Ryuuko’s “reincarnation” so to speak. That was Akira. The problem was that the human Akira took advantage of a slip-up on Shirogane’s part to run and got himself stuck in the Shadow, forcing Shirogane to take him as his child, turning him into a Shin in order to save what he thought of as the vessel for Ryuuko’s spirit. Because of Akira’s time in the shadow world, he lost his shadow, so Shirogane took its place. Shirogane only told Akira what he thought was important for him to know, which was that the world was falling out of balance and the darkness was overwhelming the light, causing patches where Kokuchi could come into the human world. Kokuchi are not suited to living in the human world where everything is of the opposite element of light and quickly go insane and become aggressive. Shirogane told Akira that his job would be to seal these patches and bring balance. He never told him about Homurabi or the Direct Royalty system and no one suspected he wasn’t telling the whole truth till Nanaya, one of Homurabi’s children found them by accident.  Nanaya got away, however, and returned to Homurabi with the report of a man with long, silver hair and blue eyes.

Confronted by Akira, Shirogane told him that there was nothing he needed to know, not about Homurabi, not about anything, because they weren’t comrades. Which, of course, resulted in Akira running and Shirogane not being able to follow. The next time Shirogane saw Akira, was later on in the day after Akira and Aya met Lulu, another of Homurabi’s children. Shirogane stopped Lulu from explaining, and she retreated after leaving Akira behind with the knowledge that Shirogane was a Direct King, and that Akira looked like Ryuuko. Akira asked Shirogane for the truth once again, and this time Shirogane told him. However, the explanation he gave Akira was actually heavily coloured by Shirogane’s own bias against humans, and he also glossed over Homurabi’s motives as well as why Homurabi was doing what he was doing because Shirogane wasn’t sure of the answer himself. Instead, Shirogane guessed, telling them that Homurabi was doing it for power and to take the human world for himself based on Shirogane’s assumptions of Homurabi’s human character. Not long after, Homurabi also appears in the human world. The fight that ensues between Homurabi and Shirogane is ended by Koryuu, with a wall of ice that makes it impossible for Shirogane to keep fighting.
It is after this fight that Akira and Kengo suggested adding Kou to their allies in order to even out the playing field. Although it ended up that Kou had already been involved in the fight in the first place, being a child of the former Direct King, Ryuuko.

The balance eventually ends up tilting too far to the shadow, putting Shisui’s human form into a coma, and forcing Shirogane to take Kou, Aya, Akira and Kengo into the Shadow World in order to stop Homurabi and restore order once and for all. While there the five are separated, and Shirogane and Akira end up finding a Nanaya possessed by multiple parasitic Kokuchi. Shirogane’s solution was to kill Nanaya, because he believed him to be too far gone, but he yielded to Akira’s request to allow him to find a way to remove the parasites from Nanaya. Nanaya is saved, and the three travel forward, and meet Koryuu, the last obstacle in their way to Homurabi. Working together, Shirogane, Homurabi and Akira defeat Koryuu, who possesses a part of Ryuuko’s factor. By taking Koryuu’s part of the Direct King factor, Akira regains all of Ryuuko’s memories. However, unlike what Shirogane had originally expected, it wasn’t Ryuuko who now stood before him. It was Akira. And that was the point when he was taken to Death City.

Character Personality:
The face that Shirogane shows to the world after he is exiled is a smiling one. Always smiling, always polite, always quiet and always gentle. A syrupy sweet, innocent tone of voice that teases, and projects the image that he is utterly too ditzy to be anything but transparent, unassuming and trustworthy. Because he has learned from being in the human world that this is the kind of personality that can gain him people’s trust and it has become almost a habit for him to throw his smile on in order to placate people’s worries, or when he has something he wishes to hide. More often than not, what he’s hiding is his anger, the anger he feels for humanity, for Homurabi, for Ryuuko’s death, and for himself. Unfortunately, because the mask is so very unlike who he really is, anyone good at reading people can tell he is acting. He doesn’t really feel happy, or quiet, or polite, or gentle. His smile never changes, and even when it is at its brightest, his eyes are never warm. In his eyes, humanity is nothing but a nuisance.

The true Shirogane is loud, rude, and unrelentingly stubborn and direct. He will complain loudly and often about anything he disapproves of until it is either gone or changed. He never says please and never says thank you, because he won’t do things like thanking you for something that you failed to already have ready for him. He demands, and he shouts, because he knows that whatever it is he’s demanding for is the right thing for the situation, and no one can tell him otherwise. He doesn’t believe that anything he chooses could be wrong, and in fact can give you many reasons for why what you’re choosing is wrong. (One of those reasons would be because you’re wrong.) Shirogane tends to analyze situations and their solutions with a very skeptical, pessimistic view, focusing solely on the negative outcomes and the risks and refusing to see how something could work to create a positive outcome.

This used to be where Ryuuko would come in. As Shirogane’s counterpart, Ryuuko balanced out Shirogane’s views and choices and personality, giving his hopeful, optimistic opinion and apologizing sincerely when Shirogane complained because he was late. Without Ryuuko, Shirogane is lost. He often takes unnecessary risks even if he believes that everything could go wrong, because he’s desperate and he can’t see any other way, evidenced by his rather shoddy handling of Akira’s initial situation which ended up with Shirogane having to turn Akira into a Shin in order to stop him from disappearing completely.

Shirogane only demands when it is something or someone that he cares about. He can be incredibly cold and uncaring when it’s towards something he doesn’t consider important, often walking right past people trying to get his attention when he doesn’t want to give them any, or even talking about them to someone else as if they aren’t even there. The list of things he considers important is sadly quite short, consisting mainly of things relating directly to his job as Direct King or to Ryuuko. He is willing to sacrifice things he considers unimportant in order to preserve the things that are important, seen by his willingness to replace Shisui in order to preserve balance, or how he is aware that reawakening Ryuuko might mean that Akira would disappear forever. Being direct doesn’t mean that he’s necessarily truthful. Just because he’ll never lie to himself doesn’t mean he can’t lie to you. If it’s something he thinks that you don’t need to know, he will never tell you. He is far from being cruel, however. Being cruel would mean that he actually cared enough to want to see you suffer. Most people are merely a means to an end in his eyes.

Having been in existence since before the dawn of humanity, Shirogane considers humans to be far beneath him. To him, humans are frail beings ruled by useless, insincere emotions that cause them to make the wrong decisions, decisions that only benefit themselves, time and time again. This view of humans is only made worse by Ryuuko’s death, which he considers a direct result of Homurabi and Shisui’s humanity. Shirogane detests any kind of worry, especially from other towards him because he believes it to be a waste of time that accomplishes nothing, and furthermore he is perfectly capable of taking care of himself, thank you very much. This is worse if you are human, because to Shirogane, you have no right in worrying about him when you’re basically a bag of animated meat that will die with a well-placed jab to the throat. In the same vein, he really dislikes arrogance in humans, and especially in Shin, even more so if they are weak and have no business being arrogant.

Character Abilities you would like to expand on further:
Shirogane is skilled at forming tactics. He is also a formidable fighter, although his approach tends to be direct and aggressive. Even as an exiled King, he still retained the ability to transform humans into Shin, despite not having the ability to travel freely between the world of the light and shadow. He is of the element of shadow and is much stronger during the night as well as in the shadow world itself. As a Shin, Shirogane’s presence is hidden from most humans with the exception of those that are more in tune with the shadow world, or humans that have seen them before and believe in their existence.

Character Weaknesses you would like to expand on further:
Shirogane is not the most social of creatures, although he can pretend to be one well enough. He often has difficulty forming lasting relationships or even temporary relationships because he doesn’t trust anyone besides himself and Ryuuko, and his distrust of humans borders on discrimination against them. It doesn’t help that when he does these uncaring, unfeeling things that he still keeps smiling which nearly always comes off as creepy.

As a Direct Royal, and personification of shadow, Shirogane is sensitive to the element of light, and he was actually continually weakening the longer he stayed in the human world. He combatted this mostly by wearing as much clothing as he could, covering every inch of his skin and wearing a wide-brimmed hat.

Losing Ryuuko was the single worst thing to happen to Shirogane and he has never come to terms with it. From the first moments of his life he was half of a pair and he is used to being half of a pair. Because Ryuuko was the optimistic one, all of Shirogane’s views and choices tend to be pessimistic, and he is usually unable and possibly also unwilling to see the optimistic side because it would be too much like accepting Ryuuko’s death and moving on and changing. Shirogane cannot handle change. He lived most of his life in the unchanging world of shadow, his own body is just an unchanging personification of shadow, nothing in his life ever changed before the creation of the Kings. Sadly, his first experience with change left him with a murdered counterpart, exile from the shadow world, and a slew of negative changes. His opinion of that change and of any other change is that it should never have happened. Everything was better the way it was before.

The wish Death the Kid made to the BREW in 2009 was to “rescue Death City and stop the waves of Madness from overtaking the world.” By whatever means necessary. Pretend you are the BREW. Why would you choose to bring this character to Death City?

Shirogane is a good choice for BREW because despite his personality defects, he is a strong, dedicated person. Once he’s decided to do something, he will never back down and will see it through to the end with everything he’s got, no matter what the consequences are. Shirogane is also skilled at using a sword.

[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]

Why is your character a Meister and not a Weapon?
Being a Meister gives Shirogane the illusion of being in control. With his personality and disinterest for Death City, the war, witches, and just people in general, he would never interact with anyone if he were a Weapon. He would most likely take the task of fighting on by himself and isolate himself completely from everyone else. As a Meister, he would still show no interest in people, but in order to survive, he would have to find a Weapon of his own and he would be more willing to have a partner if he feels that he is still the superior one. And by being willing to try partnership, he becomes open to the possibility of change and eventually admitting that he can’t live his whole life tied to just a few people.

What is your character’s Meister Ability? Why?
Soul Cloak

[ SAMPLES ]

Provide a First Person style sample in the form of a post to the DEMISE network.
[The communicator switches on to show you a sheepishly smiling Shirogane.]
I might have said some really mean things without thinking. I do hope you’ll find it in your hearts to forgive me.
[And he is still smiling as the feed cuts off.]

Provide a Third Person sample set during the last minutes on their world and/or their first few moments in the Kishin Chamber.
Shirogane watched as the final piece of Ryuuko’s King Factor returned to its rightful place.
A very small part of him knew that there would be a chance that Akira would disappear forever if Ryuuko took over that body, but this was necessary. It was probably unfair to Akira, but…
With this everything can go back to normal.
As the smoke cleared, the ‘moron, you’re late’ stuck in Shirogane’s throat. It wasn’t…that wasn’t Ryuuko. It hadn’t worked.
And then even as the anger, the helplessness closed in and he attempted to keep smiling have to keep smiling, he felt his vision shift and his environment changed. A dark room with red pillars, and someone explaining a situation so unexpected that Shirogane’s smile dropped. His hand reflexively tightened its grip on his sword, but…it wasn’t there. It clenched into a fist instead and he looked up and smiled his brightest,
“Haha, what a funny joke someone is playing on me. Really. If you don’t come out now and apologize, I’ll have to go through all the trouble of finding you before I cut you down.”
